For the first day, the musical material which was taught consisted of rhythmic exercises designed to free students from over-reliance on the use of counting meters (time signatures) and notation. Emphasis was put on singing and movement techniques in order to hear and feel rhythmic relationships.
The second day was spent examining the various concepts of voice leading. Various methods were employed to get students to understand natural laws of gravity, attraction and transition using melody. These concepts were then explored in the context of performance.
All of the students who participated had their instruments and were given the opportunity to play with Steve and his group. Many of the people there felt that this workshop was a transforming experience for them.
The concert that took place the night of the second day drew a capacity crowd and was broadcast live on WVIA-FM. Andrew Morrell (a radio broadcaster and programmer for WVIA) did a fantastic job coordinating the entire event and the capacity crowd gave a warm reception and standing ovation at the conclusion of the performance.
All who participated wanted the band to return to the area and there is sure to be a repeat performance of this same kind of event.
